James L. Brown, a 32-year-old male from Painesville, OH, tragically died on July 4, 2014. He was shot while sitting in a car in the 900 block of Hine Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Brown was taken to TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect in this case, Walter Delon Tate, a 37-year-old male from Painesville, was apprehended in Detroit on August 20, 2014. Tate was arrested by the U.S. Marshal Service and was being held on a warrant.
He was later extradited to face charges in Painesville. Detectives from Painesville were waiting to interview him upon his arrest.
Tate was charged with aggravated murder, two counts of murder, and two counts of having weapons while under disability. He was found competent to stand trial in January 2015. The trial was scheduled for later that month, and Tate remained in jail on a $5 million bond.
The motive for the shooting has not been disclosed by the police, and further details about the incident are still under investigation. The Painesville Police Department has stated that they will use every resource available to bring offenders to justice and that violent crimes will not be tolerated in the city.
