Darrell L. Nelson Jr., a 22-year-old male from Painesville, Ohio, tragically lost his life on September 29, 2020. He was born on January 4, 1998, in Columbus, Georgia, to Kelly Lawyer and Darrell L. Nelson Sr. Darrell worked for his grandfather Allen Wells at Kay Home Improvements and had a passion for computers and technology. He is survived by his sisters Kailey Marie and Savannah Nelson, and his brothers Jalen and Braylon Kimbrough.
On the evening of his death, Darrell was one of
two victims killed in a shooting incident on Morse Avenue near West Jackson Street in Painesville. According to police reports, a group of young men was recording a music video when another group arrived, leading to an argument that escalated into gunfire. Darrell and another victim, Yamil Lanzot-Rivera Jr., 32, from Philadelphia, PA, both succumbed to their injuries. A third victim was transported to the hospital, where they survived thanks to the quick actions of an officer who applied a tourniquet.
The Painesville Police Department launched an investigation into the incident, identifying multiple suspects and gathering evidence. The investigation involved several local and state agencies, including the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Lake County Prosecutor's Office.
