Cherod D. Houchins, a 21-year-old male from Columbus, OH, tragically passed away on July 28, 2014. He was fatally shot at a home on Stevens Avenue in the Franklinton neighborhood. The incident was part of a double homicide, with Robert D. Bass, 22, also losing his life in the same incident.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was orchestrated by Roshawn L. Agee, a state prison inmate serving time for a drug conviction.
Agee arranged the shooting through his girlfriend, Sophia Childs, who had a dispute with a man at the house where the killings occurred. Agee instructed Childs to pick up two of his friends and drive them to the Stevens Avenue house. Once there, the two men entered the house and shot Bass and Houchins. After the shooting, Childs picked up the men and drove them away from the scene.
Sophia Childs was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and aggravated murder, as well as possession of a weapon under disability. She was held on a $1.5 million bail. Agee was also charged with two counts of murder. The case highlighted the potential drug-related nature of the crime, although the exact involvement of Bass and Houchins in any drug activities was not clearly established.
The families of both victims mourned their loss and sought justice for the senseless violence that took the lives of two young men. The community was left grappling with the tragic consequences of the incident, and the legal proceedings continued as the suspects faced the charges brought against them.
