Jason L. Smith, a 42-year-old male from Columbus, Ohio, tragically died on March 21, 2015. He was born on August 7, 1972, and graduated from Brookhaven High School. Jason was known for his love of fishing, hunting, and watching American Pickers. He is survived by his wife, Tammy Jo Smith, his father Bud Smith, brother Chris Smith, sister Rainbow Thornton, and many nephews and nieces.
Jason's death was the result of a fatal shooting by a Columbus police officer named Matthew Carroll.
On the day of the incident, Carroll was called to a house on Summit Street where residents reported that Jason had been threatening a family member. When Carroll arrived, Jason attacked him, and during the struggle, Jason pulled out a gun. Carroll, fearing for his life, shot Jason, resulting in his death.
The incident led to an internal review by the Columbus Division of Police, which found that Carroll's actions were within department policy. No charges were filed against Carroll, and he was cleared of any wrongdoing. The case did not result in any arrests, suspects, or litigations related to Jason's death.
