David Blackmon, a 47-year-old man who lived on the same street as
Pruitt, was arrested and charged with Pruitt's murder. Blackmon initially faced charges of aggravated murder but later accepted a plea deal for involuntary manslaughter with a weapons specification. In February 2015, he was sentenced to nine years in prison. During the court proceedings, Pruitt's family expressed their grief and frustration, with his daughter stating that her father did not deserve such a fate.
Blackmon's arrest was aided by community tips and cooperation with the U.S. Marshals Task Force. Investigators found a small amount of crack cocaine and a glass crack pipe on Blackmon, and he had a history of criminal charges, including drug trafficking and receiving stolen property. Despite his extensive criminal record, Blackmon's charge was reduced in exchange for his guilty plea, leading to his imprisonment.
