Walter Lee Barfield, a 23-year-old African American male from Cleveland, tragically lost his life on February 5, 2015, in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. Barfield was one of three victims killed in a shooting at Chalk Linez Barbershop. The incident occurred when Douglas Shine Jr., a 21-year-old gang member, entered the barbershop with guns in both hands and opened fire, killing Barfield, William Gonzalez, and Brandon White. Shine was a member of the Heartless Felons gang, and the shooting was the result of an argument with a rival gang.

Following the shooting, Shine was arrested and charged with multiple counts of aggravated murder. In 2016, a jury found Shine guilty and recommended the death penalty. However, the judge ultimately sentenced Shine to four life sentences without parole plus 380 years. Shine's attorneys argued for leniency based on his troubled background, including a history of abuse and neglect. Despite the jury's recommendation, the judge decided that life without parole was a more appropriate sentence.

The case drew significant attention due to the brutality of the crime and the subsequent legal proceedings. The victims' families, including Barfield's, expressed their grief and sought justice for their loved ones. The community was deeply affected by the loss of three young men and the impact of gang violence on their neighborhood.

In the aftermath of the shooting, efforts were made to address gang violence and provide support to the affected families. The case also highlighted the challenges faced by the criminal justice system in balancing punishment and rehabilitation for offenders with troubled backgrounds.

The tragic death of Walter Barfield and the subsequent legal proceedings against Douglas Shine Jr. serve as a reminder of the devastating consequences of gang violence and the importance of community efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
