Ezequiel Rivera, a 21-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically died on June 21, 2015, in Youngstown, Ohio. Rivera was shot and killed at Mi Raza Bar in the early hours of the morning after returning to the bar armed with a shotgun. The incident began when Rivera got into a fight with another patron, and both were asked to leave. However, Rivera returned a few minutes later with a shotgun, still looking for a confrontation.
An employee of the bar, who had a valid concealed carry
permit, was also armed with a handgun. Witnesses reported that the employee repeatedly told Rivera to put the gun down, but Rivera ignored the commands. Eventually, the employee fired at Rivera, resulting in his death. Steve Gonzalez, Rivera's brother-in-law, was accidentally shot in the back while trying to defuse the situation and was taken to the hospital.
The Youngstown Police Department conducted an investigation into the incident. Although no charges were immediately filed, authorities worked with prosecutors to determine whether any charges were appropriate.
