On January 12, 2016, 14-year-old Georta Mack, a young African American boy from Cincinnati, OH, tragically died after being shot by his father. Georta, who was affectionately known as "Day-Day" by his neighbors, had decided to skip school that morning and returned home, hiding in the basement. His father, who was unaware that Georta had not gone to school, heard a noise and, thinking there was an intruder, grabbed a loaded .45-caliber gun and went downstairs.
Startled by Georta jumping out at him, the father accidentally fired the gun, hitting Georta in the neck.
The father immediately called 911, expressing deep regret and pleading for help to save his son. Despite his efforts, Georta was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The incident was deemed a tragic accident, and no charges were filed against the father. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters stated that the father's story about mistaking his son for an intruder checked out with the forensic evidence, and therefore, no criminal charges were appropriate.
The community was deeply affected by the loss of Georta, with neighbors describing him and his father as kind and respectful people. The incident highlighted the dangers of having guns in the home, as studies have shown that having a gun increases the risk of accidental shootings, homicides, or suicide attempts.
