Bethany LouAnn Thompson, an 11-year-old girl from Cable, Ohio, tragically passed away on October 19, 2016. Bethany was a sixth grader at Triad Local Schools and was known for her love of swimming, coloring, shopping, music, superheroes, and Pokémon. She was also passionate about animals and horseback riding. Bethany's death was a result of suicide, driven by severe bullying she endured at school.
Bethany had been diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of three, and although she was
declared cancer-free by 2008, the radiation treatments left her with permanent nerve damage. This resulted in a "crooked smile" and curly hair, which became targets for bullies within her sixth-grade class. Despite her struggles, Bethany remained resilient and even created anti-bullying posters with a friend, hoping to make a difference. Unfortunately, the bullying persisted, and on the day of her death, Bethany found a gun in her family's home and took her own life.
The Triad Local School District had previously investigated a bullying complaint involving Bethany and had resolved it, but the harassment continued. Bethany's family has since received an outpouring of support and donations from people all over the country. They plan to use the financial contributions to cover her funeral costs and set up a scholarship fund in her name.
Bethany's story highlights the devastating impact of bullying and the importance of creating a supportive and safe environment for all students. Her memory lives on through the love and support of her family, friends, and community.
