In a grim Detroit-area case, a four-year-old boy named Robert Byrd tragically lost his life on Mother's Day in 2011. The young male was found deceased in the Highland Park home of his legal guardians, his aunt and uncle, Matilda and Randy Gardner. The residence starkly lacked basic comforts, containing no beds and only a few pieces of furniture and blankets. An investigation into the child's death revealed a horrifying pattern of abuse and neglect.
