On December 26, 2016, 19-year-old Mohamud Khalif Mohamed, a Black male, was fatally shot at his residence on Caldwell Place in Columbus, Ohio. Columbus Police Officers and medics were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:12 p.m. upon receiving a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Mohamed inside the residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
He was immediately transported to Grant Hospital's emergency room in critical condition but tragically succumbed to his injuries at approximately 9:24 p.m. that same day.
The incident was determined to be a case of self-defense. Mohamed's 21-year-old brother, Ali Mohamed, claimed that his younger brother threatened him with a switchblade knife, prompting him to shoot in self-defense. The Franklin County Coroner's office conducted a partial autopsy to recover the bullet, respecting the family's religious objections to a full autopsy. Detectives investigated the case and concluded that Ali Mohamed's actions were justified, and no charges were filed against him.
The case remains a part of the Columbus Police Department's Homicide Cold Case Unit Archive, and authorities continue to seek any additional information that might help bring closure to the family. The family, part of the Somali community, has cooperated with the investigation and expressed their grief over the tragic loss.
