The suspect in this tragic event was identified as Tres Peterson, a 21-year-old man who was Cheyenne's ex-fiancé.
According to police reports, Peterson entered the home through an unlocked door and proceeded to shoot and kill a dog before chasing Cheyenne through the house. He then found Kelly Freshour and Timothy Keyser in a bedroom, where he shot and killed all three victims. Peterson ultimately took his own life in the dining room.
The incident was classified as a murder-suicide, and Peterson had legally purchased the 9mm handgun he used on the same day as the shooting. Peterson and Cheyenne had recently ended their relationship, but there were no prior indications of violent behavior from Peterson. The investigation revealed that Peterson had a troubled childhood, with records showing that he and his brother were taken into custody by the Stark County Department of Child & Family Services due to neglect and abuse.
Cheyenne's friend, Brandon Posey, was present in the home with Cheyenne's 3-year-old son at the time of the shooting. Posey managed to escape with the child, ensuring his safety. The child was later placed in the custody of his great-grandparents.
The Canton Police Department conducted a thorough investigation, and while no further suspects were identified, the case remains a tragic reminder of the impact of domestic violence and mental health issues.
