Michael Kuznik, a 50-year-old man from Cleveland, OH, was tragically murdered on April 14, 2017. He and his wife, Trina Tomola-Kuznik, were the owners of Mr. Cars, a car dealership in the Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland. The couple was found shot to death inside their business, along with their family dog, Axzel. Their 19-year-old son discovered their bodies after becoming concerned when they did not return home as expected.
The investigation into their deaths led to the arrest of
Joseph McAlpin, who was identified as the primary suspect. McAlpin, along with two co-defendants, Andrew Keener and Jerome Diggs, had planned to steal cars from the dealership. On the night of the murders, McAlpin shot and killed Michael Kuznik and Trina Tomola-Kuznik, and the group then stole two cars from the lot. Keener later pled guilty to charges related to the deaths and was sentenced to six years in prison.
McAlpin was found guilty on multiple charges, including aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, kidnapping, grand theft, and cruelty to animals. He was sentenced to death for his crimes. The Supreme Court of Ohio upheld the death penalty, finding overwhelming evidence of McAlpin's guilt. Despite McAlpin's claims of errors during his trial and his request for a new trial, the court concluded that none of the alleged errors impacted his substantial rights or the outcome of the trial.
