LeMichael Wayne Stevenson, a 24-year-old African American man from Akron, OH, tragically lost his life on June 6, 2017. He was affectionately known as "LeMike" and was born on May 4, 1993. Stevenson was shot once at his home in the 800 block of Sumner Street, Akron, and was later pronounced dead at Akron City Hospital.
Authorities launched an investigation into his death and identified a suspect, 26-year-old Malik Shabazz Baldwin. Baldwin was described as armed and dangerous, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds. He was sought by the police for his involvement in the shooting.
In August 2018, Malik Baldwin pleaded guilty to felony charges of manslaughter with a gun and kidnapping. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Baldwin had approached Stevenson while holding a gun and dragged him in front of a vehicle on Sumner Street. The two engaged in a struggle before Stevenson was shot. Baldwin was arrested five months after the incident.
The case concluded with Baldwin's guilty plea, which led to the dropping of charges of aggravated murder and murder. Had he been convicted, Baldwin could have faced the death penalty.
