On August 27, 2017, Leroy White, a 40-year-old male from Cincinnati, OH, was tragically shot in the head and killed in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. The incident occurred around 5:07 p.m. near 1706 Race Street. White was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Cincinnati Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an investigation into the shooting. Early the next morning, 37-year-old Terrell Tolbert was arrested and charged with murder in connection with White's death.
Tolbert was later indicted on charges related to the homicide.
During the investigation, it was revealed that White and Tolbert had a prior altercation the night before the shooting. Tolbert claimed that White had shot at him the night before and again on the day of the incident. Despite these claims, Tolbert was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
White's family expressed mixed feelings about the plea deal and the resulting sentence. While his mother agreed to the sentence, two of White's sisters did not feel that the 14-year sentence was sufficient for the loss of their loved one.
The case highlighted the complexities and emotional toll of violent crimes on victims' families and the challenges faced by the legal system in delivering justice.
