Colin Brown, a 45-year-old man from Youngstown, OH, was tragically shot and killed on November 28, 2017, at the Last Call Bar on South Avenue. Brown was in the bar's bathroom when he was shot, and witnesses saw Johnny Ray Wallace III, 24, running out of the bathroom shortly after the gunshot was heard. Wallace was the only person in the bathroom with Brown at the time.
The case went to trial in June 2018, but ended in a mistrial as the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.
Prosecutors decided to retry Wallace, and in June 2019, he was found guilty of murder. Wallace was sentenced to 15 years to life for murder, with additional sentences for firearm specifications and being a felon in possession of a firearm, totaling 21 years to life in prison.
The victim's girlfriend testified during the trial, describing how she heard the gunshot and saw Wallace coming out of the bathroom with a smirk on his face. She said it was a moment she would never forget. Brown's sister also spoke at the sentencing, expressing the pain and suffering the family had endured since Brown's death.
Wallace's attorney claimed that the jury might have felt pressured or too emotional about the case and announced plans to appeal the conviction. Despite this, Judge Anthony Donofrio praised the jury for taking their responsibilities seriously.
