On June 4, 2018, 2-year-old Jvonte Johnston of Dayton, Ohio, tragically died after being accidentally shot by his 13-year-old brother while playing with a gun. The incident occurred at their home in Harrison Township. Initially, investigators believed that Jvonte had accidentally shot himself, but it was later determined that his brother was holding the gun when it discharged.
The 13-year-old brother was charged with reckless homicide in juvenile court and had a plea of denial entered on
his behalf. He was ordered to stay in juvenile detention pending further court proceedings. Additionally, Jvonte's father, 34-year-old Jamahl Evans, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Evans, who was operating a drug operation out of the house, faced several federal charges. Investigators recovered two handguns and marijuana ready for distribution from the residence.
The tragic death of Jvonte Johnston brought attention to the dangers of firearms in homes, especially when children are present.
