Bonn Rassavong, a 46-year-old man originally from Laos, was tragically shot and killed on July 7, 2018, in Akron, Ohio. He was walking to his car on Schiller Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when he was approached by two men in dark clothing who demanded his property. The assailants shot Rassavong in the head, and his brother managed to escape, while his mother witnessed the entire incident.
Following the murder, Akron police issued a warrant for the arrest of Donyea Tyus, 29, and his brother
Orlando Tyus, 27, as suspects in the crime. Detectives believed that the Tyus brothers were also responsible for a second homicide that occurred about an hour later in a parking lot in the 300 block of South Arlington Street. Robert McCall, 58, was found with a gunshot wound to his head in that incident.
Orlando Tyus was arrested on August 14, 2018, and was held in the Summit County Jail. Donyea Tyus remained at large for some time but was eventually captured and charged with the murders. The case went to trial, and both brothers were found guilty of aggravated murder, murder, and felonious assault. They were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The community was deeply affected by Rassavong's death, as he was known for his generosity and kindness. He was a beloved member of the Army & Navy 250 Club, where he often volunteered to make food for special events. Friends and family members set up a reward fund and raised money to support his family and to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
