Donna Gail Castleberry, a 23-year-old woman from Columbus, Ohio, tragically lost her life on August 23, 2018. Donna was employed as a sex worker while also caring for her two children. Despite facing significant challenges, including substance abuse and isolation, she was striving to turn her life around with the support of her family. On the evening of her death, Donna was shot three times by Andrew Mitchell, a vice officer with the Columbus police department, while she was in his unmarked
car. The coroner ruled her death as a homicide.
Andrew Mitchell claimed that he shot Donna in self-defense during an undercover prostitution operation. However, authorities did not accept his statements at face value. An internal investigation revealed a history of violence and drug-related incidents involving Mitchell. He was indicted on charges related to kidnapping victims under the guise of an arrest and coercing them into engaging in sexual activities in exchange for their freedom. Mitchell resigned from the police force in March 2019 and faced legal battles over Donna's death.
In April 2022, Mitchell was tried for murder and voluntary manslaughter but the jury was deadlocked, resulting in a mistrial. He was acquitted on state charges in April 2023, but later pleaded guilty to federal charges of depriving individuals of their civil rights and obstructing justice. Under the plea agreement, Mitchell is recommended to spend between seven and 11 years in prison.
