Martrece Dashawn Dobson, a 30-year-old African American man from Toledo, Ohio, affectionately known as "Trece," tragically passed away on October 24, 2018. He died unexpectedly at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, leaving behind his mother, Tonya M. Dobson, his father, Quentin A. Player, and his children, Aidynn, Martrece Jr., and Dominic Dobson. The community mourned the loss of Dobson, who was remembered fondly by his family and friends.
The circumstances surrounding Dobson's death were investigated, and it was determined that he was shot while sitting in a car at the corner of East Oakland Street and Franklin Avenue in north Toledo. When police arrived at the scene, they found Dobson suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite being transported to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the investigation, Rashad Gaines was identified as the suspect responsible for Dobson's death. Gaines was indicted on a murder charge by a Lucas County grand jury. In March 2022, a Lucas County jury found Gaines guilty of murder. He was subsequently sentenced for his role in the tragic incident.
The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Toledo and prompted community leaders to call for collective efforts to address the problem. The conviction of Gaines brought some measure of justice for Dobson's family and friends, although the loss of such a young life remains a poignant reminder of the impact of violence on communities.
