D’Shane Wilcox, a 28-year-old African American sanitation worker and father of two, was tragically shot and killed on November 13, 2018, while collecting trash on his route in Cleveland, Ohio. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. ET on East 138th Street near Lambert Avenue in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Two other workers who were with Wilcox at the time were not injured.
Despite an extensive investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with Wilcox's death.
Cleveland police have only a brief description of the shooter: a man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The case remains unsolved, and authorities have offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
The Solid Waste Association of North America expressed its deepest condolences and frustration over the incident, emphasizing that Wilcox was simply doing his job when he was killed. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson offered condolences to Wilcox's family but did not cover the cost of his funeral.
