DeVon Orr, a 19-year-old Black man from Cleveland, Ohio, was fatally shot on the afternoon of February 25, 2022. At the time, DeVon and his girlfriend were visiting a residence in the city's Ohio City neighborhood. The shooting occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of Washington Avenue.
According to witnesses, three men came to the home to smoke marijuana. DeVon went with the group into a stairway, and shortly after, a single gunshot was heard.
Witnesses then saw the three men run from the scene. DeVon was found unresponsive on the stairs with a gunshot wound to his chest. Emergency responders transported him to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
The investigation led authorities to a home on the 9800 block of Gambier Avenue. In March 2022, members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and Cleveland SWAT entered the residence and located two suspects wanted in connection with DeVon's murder. Hiding in the basement, they found a 12-year-old boy and a 17-year-old male. Authorities noted that the 12-year-old suspect was already on bond for an attempted murder charge and had removed his ankle monitor. A third juvenile, wanted in a separate homicide, was also found hiding in the home.
In August 2022, the case saw a significant development when a getaway driver involved in DeVon Orr's fatal shooting pleaded guilty. The individual was subsequently sentenced to 22 years in prison for their role in the crime.
