On May 6, 2019, Jose Hermilo Lopez Gutierrez, a 50-year-old man of Hispanic ethnicity, was fatally shot in Springfield, Ohio. The incident occurred in the 1100 block of Clifton Avenue, where Gutierrez was found against a car, having been shot in the arm and side. He was later pronounced dead at Springfield Regional Medical Center. Investigators determined that Gutierrez was also robbed during the attack, as witnesses reported seeing the suspect reaching into his pockets after shooting him.
Springfield police identified a person of interest in the case, a woman seen in surveillance footage wearing a red hoodie, blue jacket, grey pants, and pink shoes. The footage shows her casually walking and smoking a cigarette before pulling her hood up and running away. Despite extensive investigation efforts, including the release of the surveillance video to the public, no arrests were made immediately following the incident.
In June 2024, Brooke Jacks, a 33-year-old woman, was convicted of aggravated murder and other charges related to Gutierrez's death. Jacks was arrested in July 2023 with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, and digital evidence, along with information from the public, helped identify her as the suspect. The conviction brought closure to the case, which had remained unsolved for nearly five years.
