On December 5, 2019, Brandon Harris, a 34-year-old man from Dayton, Ohio, was fatally shot outside Rick's Jazz Lab on Lakeview Avenue. Harris was one of three victims shot by Christopher Leon Smith, who used a handgun to commit two homicides within hours. Harris, who was African American, tragically lost his life in the early hours of that morning.
The investigation into Harris's death revealed that Smith also shot and killed Clarence Brown III later that same day, approximately 100 feet
away from the first shooting. Detectives from the Montgomery County Homicide Unit worked diligently to gather evidence, including witness statements and surveillance footage, which led to Smith's arrest. On January 28, 2020, Smith was indicted on multiple charges, including four counts of murder and six counts of felonious assault.
After a trial, Smith was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for at least 38 years. The prosecution argued for the maximum sentence due to the severity of the crimes and Smith's lack of remorse. The defense attempted to secure a mistrial or new trial, claiming procedural errors, but their motion was denied.
The tragic deaths of Brandon Harris and Clarence Brown III brought attention to the issue of gun violence in Dayton and led to calls for increased measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The community mourned the loss of both men and sought justice for their families.
