Deonte Tay Kyle Yepes, a 36-year-old man from Columbus, OH, tragically died on March 5, 2020, from injuries sustained in a shooting. Columbus police were called to the scene around 10:10 a.m. in the 600 block of South Napoleon Avenue in the Eastmoor neighborhood. Yepes was found lying in the grass with gunshot wounds and was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he underwent surgery but ultimately succumbed to his injuries at 1:56 p.m.
His death marked the 20th homicide in Columbus that year.
The investigation into Yepes' death led to the arrest of 27-year-old Terrance Roane. On March 27, 2020, Roane was charged with murder in connection with the shooting. According to eyewitnesses, Roane was seen standing outside a car Yepes was in and fired several shots into the vehicle, striking Yepes. Roane had a history of past convictions, including weapons under disability and possession of cocaine. He had also been charged with murder in 2011 in Summit County after a shooting incident that resulted in the death of an 11-year-old girl, although those charges were later dismissed for lack of evidence.
The case against Roane was built on the testimonies of several eyewitnesses and evidence collected at the scene. The Columbus police homicide detectives worked diligently to bring Roane to justice, and he was eventually arrested and charged with the murder of Yepes. The community and Yepes' loved ones were deeply affected by his death, and the investigation brought some measure of closure to the tragic event.
