Mikayla Pickett, an 8-year-old girl from Akron, Ohio, tragically lost her life on August 14, 2020. She was attending a birthday party on Roselle Avenue when a hail of gunfire erupted, resulting in her death and injuries to a 14-year-old girl. Mikayla, described as a happy and lovable child who loved dancing and gymnastics, was supposed to start third grade at Portage Path Community Learning Center. Her mother, Shoskamika Risper, received the devastating news while at work, as Mikayla had been taken to the party by a babysitter.
The investigation into Mikayla's death led to multiple arrests. On April 28, 2023, 22-year-old Robert Scott was arrested in Michigan and charged with aggravated murder and felonious assault. Two other men, Emahni Thomas, 21, and Donte Farmer, 37, who were already incarcerated on unrelated charges, were also charged with aggravated murder and felonious assault in connection with the incident. Additionally, an 18-year-old was arrested on May 15, 2023, facing similar charges.
The Akron Police Department, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals' Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, worked tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
