On the day of the incident, Dingess was serving as a police informant and was in an unmarked police vehicle with Officer Skernivitz when they were approached by David McDaniel, Kevin Robinson, and another individual who attempted to rob them. During the robbery, McDaniel and Robinson fired multiple shots at the vehicle, striking both Dingess and Skernivitz. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
