On October 9, 2020, Jermaine Lewis, a 19-year-old male from Dayton, Ohio, was tragically killed in a shooting at the Red Roof Inn on Miller Lane in Butler Township. Witnesses reported that Lewis was found lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital.
The investigation into Lewis's death led to the arrest of Da’Jahnn Phillip Alexander, a 20-year-old Dayton man.
Alexander was indicted on charges of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. Witnesses described Alexander as being in the backseat of a red Chevrolet Impala when he fired multiple shots at Lewis. Alexander was later arrested in Owensboro, Kentucky, and held in jail until he was brought back to Montgomery County for arraignment.
In January 2022, Alexander pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence, and bribery. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison, with no eligibility for early release. The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Alexander's actions directly led to Lewis's death.
The case drew significant attention from the community, with many expressing concern over the increasing violence in the area. Butler Township Police and Miami Valley Crime Stoppers urged anyone with information about the crime to come forward. The tragic loss of Jermaine Lewis highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by communities in addressing gun violence and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
