Casey Christopher Tank Goodson, a 23-year-old Black man from Columbus, Ohio, tragically died on December 4, 2020. Goodson was fatally shot by former Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Meade as he was entering his grandmother's home. Meade claimed that Goodson pointed a gun at him twice, prompting him to shoot in self-defense. However, Goodson's family and prosecutors argued that he was holding a sandwich bag and his keys, not a gun, when he was shot.
The incident led to significant
legal battles and public outcry. Meade faced charges of murder and reckless homicide. The case went to trial, but the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in a mistrial in February 2024. The judge declared a mistrial after nearly three days of deliberations, with the jury deadlocked on all charges. Special prosecutors announced that they would assess their options for a retrial.
In addition to the criminal proceedings, Goodson's family filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Franklin County. In August 2024, the family reached a $7 million settlement to resolve their civil claims. The settlement was seen as a historic acknowledgment of the impact of Goodson's death on his family and the broader community. Despite the settlement, the criminal case against Meade continues, with a retrial scheduled to begin on October 31, 2024.
The death of Casey Goodson Jr. has become a rallying cry in protests over racial injustice in policing, adding his name to the list of Black individuals killed by law enforcement officers. His family has expressed frustration with the legal system but remains hopeful for accountability and justice.
