Davon Butler was an 18-year-old male from Toledo, Ohio, described by his family as a kind and gentle soul who loved art and music. His mother, Beonka, said he was greatly loved by his family and friends. In a statement, she shared that his death left a hole in their hearts that will never be filled, and that he would be forever loved and missed.
On the night of October 14, 2021, just after 10:30 p.m., police were called to a home in the 1100 block of Montrose Avenue.
They found Davon inside, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
According to court documents based on witness statements, the shooting happened during an argument. Eight witnesses told police that Marvin Dyer, 57, was in a dispute with another man inside the home. Dyer allegedly pulled out a gun and was yelling and waving it around when he fired. The bullet struck Davon, who was not the intended target. Investigators also had video evidence that placed Dyer in the same room as Davon shortly before the shooting occurred.
The violence connected to the case did not end that night. Less than 24 hours after the shooting, the house on Montrose Avenue was destroyed by a fire. The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department determined that the fire was an act of arson, started with an incendiary device.
On October 20, 2021, police arrested Marvin Dyer and charged him with murder in connection with Davon's death. A judge set his bond at $1 million. Dyer pleaded not guilty to the homicide charges, and the criminal case against him remains pending.
