Darnell Pierre Hammond, a 37-year-old African American man from Akron, OH, tragically died on August 19, 2022. He was shot and killed in a dispute over a suspected stolen item. The incident occurred on Russell Avenue and Boulevard Street, where Hammond was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was rushed to Cleveland Clinic Akron General but succumbed to his injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the dispute was between Hammond and a 21-year-old individual.
Akron Police Lt. Michael Miller stated that the circumstances leading to the shooting are still under investigation, and no charges have been filed yet. The investigation continues as authorities work to gather more information and determine the exact sequence of events that led to Hammond's death.
Hammond was well-known in his community and had a passion for music, rapping, and making beats. He is remembered fondly by his family, friends, and the Akron community. His father, Darnell P. Blanks; mother, Shirley Hammond-Blanks; children, D’Moni and Nyla Hammond; and other family members are mourning his loss.
