Theo Vance Echols was a 32-year-old Black man and a father from the Cleveland suburb of Brook Park, Ohio. He was familiar to residents in the South Broadway neighborhood where he died, having grown up with the brothers of a woman who lived on the street.
In the early morning of August 27, 2022, residents on East 50th Street heard a disturbance. Around 4:30 a.m., one neighbor heard two men arguing for about five minutes.
The argument was followed by the sound of five or six gunshots and a vehicle speeding away. Another resident heard the shots but not the argument. When she looked outside, she saw a body at the end of her driveway and called 911. First responders arrived to find Theo Echols, who had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cleveland police investigators processed the area, collecting six 9 mm cartridge casings from the street, along with a plastic cup and a cigar tip. They found a cell phone and a set of keys in Echols’s pocket and another set of keys in his hand. Detectives learned that on the night of the shooting, Echols had told friends he was going to a party and may have been hanging out with a friend, Jerome Rivers. Initially, police had no suspects and asked the public for any information.
The investigation soon centered on Jerome Rivers, 32, who was identified as a friend of Echols. After eluding authorities for a couple of weeks, Rivers was located and taken into custody at a hotel. He was subsequently charged in connection with the killing.
The case against Jerome Rivers proceeded to trial, where he was convicted of murdering Theo Echols. Following the conviction, a judge sentenced Rivers to a term of 21 years to life in prison. The case is now considered closed.
