Edward Charles McConnell, aged 33, was a patrolman with the Asheville Police Department in North Carolina. On July 7, 1911, he succumbed to injuries sustained four days earlier when he was shot by a prisoner he was transporting. The incident occurred at the intersection of South Main Street and McDowell Street. McConnell was shot by the prisoner, who had been arrested for stealing two cows from Hendersonville.
The suspect was captured in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 4, 1912, by the
Anderson County sheriff and a Fulton County deputy. He was returned to Asheville, where he was charged with first-degree murder and placed in the Buncombe County Jail. However, during the trial, the suspect was acquitted of Officer McConnell's murder.
Officer McConnell had served with the Asheville Police Department for four years and was survived by his wife and two children. His death was a tragic event that highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
