On August 10, 2023, the body of 22-year-old Jeraun William Spencer was discovered in a wooded area off McKinney Road in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office initiated a homicide investigation, determining that Spencer had been fatally shot while inside a vehicle traveling along Haywood Road in West Asheville during the early morning hours of August 10.
On August 16, 2023, authorities arrested 25-year-old Javorie Ammon Thompson of Durham, charging him with second-degree murder in connection with Spencer's death. Thompson was apprehended during a vehicle stop on Interstate 40 by the Black Mountain Police Department and is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility on a $500,000 bond.
The investigation also led to the arrest of 25-year-old Malik Raheim Dashawn Young of Arden, who was charged with felony accessory after the fact in Spencer's death. Young was taken into custody on August 16, 2023.
Spencer's mother, Rasonna LaPierre-Brown, has publicly appealed for anyone with information regarding her son's death to come forward, expressing a deep desire for justice. She recounted an eerie premonition her son had shared before his death, indicating that someone close to him might have been involved.
