Patrol Officer William Rayvon Gilmore, Jr., aged 25, of the Clayton Police Department in North Carolina, tragically lost his life on January 30, 1982. Officer Gilmore and his partner responded to a call about a large, disorderly group playing loud music on Washington Street. After dispersing the group, Officer Gilmore was seated in his patrol car, completing a report, when a man approached the vehicle and shot him in the face, resulting in his death.
