Paul Andrew Hale, a 35-year-old detective with the Raleigh Police Department, was tragically killed on July 11, 1997, while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect. Detective Hale, who had served with the department for seven years, was fatally shot in the head during a stakeout at an apartment building on East Lenoir Street. He and his partner were approaching the suspect's vehicle when the suspect, a 20-year-old male, fired a shot that struck Detective Hale.
His partner returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was subsequently taken into custody.
The suspect was later convicted of Detective Hale's murder and sentenced to life in prison. As of June 2023, the suspect remains in a maximum-security prison under close watch. Detective Hale's death was a significant loss to the Raleigh Police Department, and he was remembered for his dedication and service. He had been promoted just five days before his death and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
