Larry Todd Cook, a 30-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on January 27, 2000, in Lexington, North Carolina. Cook, who served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, was shot and killed while attempting to serve a misdemeanor trespassing warrant. The incident occurred when Cook went alone to the suspect's home to serve the warrant. The suspect, who had a lengthy criminal record consisting of non-violent crimes, shot Cook with a shotgun in the back of the head, back, and legs. Another individual in the house called 911 to report the shooting as the suspect fled the scene.
A chase ensued involving officers from several agencies, which ended when the suspect crashed into a roadblock. As officers approached the vehicle, the suspect committed suicide. Cook had served with the Davidson County Sheriff's Office for three years and was survived by his fiancée, Kimberly Simmons, and their young daughter, Fallon Brooklyn Cook. The funeral service for Cook was held at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Lexington, and he was buried in Crestview Memorial Park Cemetery in Winston-Salem.
