Skye Moniqua Lee, an 18-year-old African American female, was tragically found dead in her apartment at 3628 Keystone Place, Durham, NC, on March 30, 2008. Officers responded to calls about a shooting and discovered her body inside the apartment. Her 10-month-old son was found unharmed in the same apartment.
Cory Jiggets, a 19-year-old African American male and former student at Northern High School in Durham, was arrested and charged with the murder of Skye Moniqua Lee.
Jiggets was the father of Lee's 10-month-old son. Investigators believe the motive for the slaying was domestic, as Jiggets had been ordered to stay away from Lee following a December assault.
Jiggets was on probation at the time of the crime, having been placed on probation in 2006. He had several instances of probation, including one imposed in Durham County and several transferred from Guilford County for supervision. Despite being charged with breaking and entering in August 2007 and assaulting Lee in December 2007, the citation process for revoking his probation did not begin until February 2008.
On March 31, 2008, Jiggets was arrested after officers spotted his car and apprehended him as he tried to flee from a house on Young Street. He was held without bond in the Durham County Jail. On April 7, 2008, Jiggets was indicted for the murder of Skye Moniqua Lee.
In March 2009, Cory Jiggets pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 19 to 25 years in prison. As part of his sentence, he is forbidden to contact his son or any members of Lee's family.
The tragic death of Skye Moniqua Lee left a profound impact on her community, with neighbors and school officials expressing their deep sorrow and sympathies for her family and loved ones.
