She was born on December 22, 1933, in Moore County, North Carolina, to James Alexander Garner and Virgie Ritter Garner. Bertha was preceded in death by her brothers Dock Layne Jr. and Gary Garner. She was laid to rest in Johnson Grove Cemetery in Vass, Moore County, North Carolina.
