On a summer evening in Detroit, a routine stop at a gas station turned into a fatal encounter for Terry Williams. As he was leaving the Valero gas station located at 7 Mile Road and Shiawassee on August 22, two men approached him in what authorities believe was an attempted robbery. During the confrontation, Terry Williams was shot.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting left a void of information, with Detroit police and Crime Stoppers appealing to the public for assistance. A man by the name of Kevin Pearson was identified as a person of interest in the case. He was described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds, with a dark complexion. A cash reward was offered for any information that could lead to a break in the case, as the community was urged to help bring those responsible to justice.
Years later, a broader federal investigation into a violent street gang provided a significant development in the case. In May 2017, the Department of Justice announced charges against five members of the 'YNS' gang, a group known for its ruthless violence in northwest Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood. Among those charged was Kevin Pearson. The federal indictment accused Pearson of murder in aid of racketeering. The indictment alleged that YNS members engaged in a pattern of violent crimes, including murder, to further their criminal enterprise. The charges brought against Pearson were part of a larger effort to dismantle the dangerous street gang and bring a measure of resolution to the violent acts they were alleged to have committed.
