Robert Dylan Smith, a 17-year-old male from Greensboro, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on November 20, 2011. The circumstances surrounding his death were part of a horrific shooting spree carried out by his mother, Mary Ann Holder. Holder, 36, went on a rampage, shooting six people before turning the gun on herself. Among the victims were her sons, Robert Dylan Smith and Zachary "Zach" Lee Smith, 14, as well as her 8-year-old niece, Hanaleigh Michelle Suttles.

The shooting spree began when Holder shot her former lover, Randal Scott "Randy" Lamb, 40, in the arm and elbow at the GTCC's Aviation Center. Lamb's injuries were not life-threatening, and he managed to call his wife, who then alerted the authorities. Holder then proceeded to her home, where she shot her sons, Robert Dylan Smith and Zachary Smith, as well as her niece, Hanaleigh Suttles. Robert Dylan Smith was declared dead at the scene, while Zachary and Hanaleigh succumbed to their injuries later at the hospital. Holder also shot her nephew, Richard Brian "Ricky" Suttles, 17, and Robert Dylan Smith's girlfriend, Makayla Kee Woods, 17, both of whom were critically injured but survived.
Mary Ann Holder left behind two notes taking responsibility for the shootings and apologizing for the pain she caused. The motive behind her actions remains unclear, but it is believed that a tumultuous relationship with her former lover, Randy Lamb, played a significant role. Holder and Lamb had a history of restraining orders and legal disputes, including a civil lawsuit for "alienation of affection" filed by Lamb's wife. The day before the shootings, the Lambs had reached a settlement in the lawsuit, which may have contributed to Holder's actions.
The investigation into the shooting spree revealed that Holder had no drugs in her system at the time of the incident, although a bag containing cocaine was found in her vehicle. The weapon used in the shootings was a .38-caliber handgun, which Holder used to shoot all her victims in the head. The tragic event left the community grappling with the loss of young lives and the senseless violence that unfolded on that fateful day.
