Rose Marie Guzman, a 24-year-old woman from Louisburg, NC, tragically lost her life on December 14, 2011, in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. The incident occurred at the Franklin Court apartments, where Gregory Hicks, 29, fatally shot Rose Marie Guzman before turning the gun on himself. Guzman, who was staying with a friend at the time, had a history of domestic violence with Hicks.
The night before her death, Guzman reported to the police that Hicks had assaulted her, leading to an arrest warrant being issued for Hicks.
The couple's tumultuous relationship had been marked by previous incidents of violence. In August, Hicks had been convicted of assaulting Guzman, during which he punched her in the face and threatened to kill her. On the morning of December 14, Hicks forced his way into the apartment with the help of Ryan Reynolds, who knocked on the door to allow Hicks entry. Once inside, Hicks shot Guzman and then himself, leaving behind their two young children, who were not physically harmed.
The case highlighted the ongoing issue of domestic violence and its devastating consequences. Chief Rick Lassiter of the Louisburg Police Department noted that such crimes often increase around the holidays due to family tensions. The tragic event underscored the need for better support and protection for victims of domestic violence, as well as more effective measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
