Gabrielle Reece, a 19-year-old woman, was tragically shot and killed on April 19, 2009, at a house just south of Louisburg, North Carolina. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Bishop and another man attempting to dispose of her body by placing it in a trash bag and setting fire to the chair she had been sitting in. Bishop fled the scene but was later apprehended by deputies.
David Bishop, who was on probation at the time of the incident, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. He had a prior conviction for carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a weapon in assembly, both Class I misdemeanors, for which he was placed on 12 months' probation. Bishop had also been arrested on April 11, 2009, for charges of injury to personal property, resisting arrest, intoxication, and disruptive behavior. Despite his probation status, he was released on bond.
Following his arrest, Bishop was held in the Franklin County jail without bond. He later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Gabrielle Reece and was sentenced to 189 to 236 months in prison. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, but a lifelong friend of Reece mentioned that Bishop "seemed angry" and that there was a chance he could become violent.
