Brianna Nicole Jones, a 16-year-old African American girl, tragically lost her life on December 31, 2013, in Louisburg, North Carolina. She was found dead alongside her mother, Akesia Michelle Jones Toney, in their home on West River Road. The incident occurred when Akesia's estranged husband, Ricky Junior Toney, and his 16-year-old brother, Joey Kearney, broke into the house.
Akesia had previously obtained a restraining order against Ricky due to threats of violence, including a threat to kill her with a sawed-off shotgun.
On the night of the incident, Franklin County deputies were dispatched to the house around 2:30 a.m. after receiving a call from Akesia. The call was abruptly disconnected, and when deputies arrived, they found the front door slightly open with lights on inside. Upon entering, they discovered signs of a struggle and found both Akesia and Brianna dead from apparent gunshot wounds in the master bedroom.
A six-hour search ensued across three counties before officers apprehended Ricky Toney and Joey Kearney in Warren County. During the confrontation, Ricky Toney was fatally injured in a gunfire exchange with the police. Joey Kearney was also wounded but survived and was taken into custody. He was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, and two counts of first-degree murder.
The community of Louisburg was deeply affected by the loss of Brianna and her mother. Nearly a thousand friends, family members, and fellow students attended a memorial service at Louisburg High School to honor their lives. The service included contemporary gospel music, Bible readings, and heartfelt comments from those who knew them best. Brianna was remembered for her zest for life and eagerness to learn, while Akesia's coworker emphasized the importance of addressing domestic violence.
The case highlighted the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating impact it can have on families and communities. The investigation into the incident was thorough, and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office worked diligently to bring justice to the victims. Joey Kearney remains in custody, facing serious felony charges for his involvement in the tragic deaths of Brianna Nicole Jones and her mother, Akesia Michelle Jones Toney.
