Anthony James Dochtermann, a 25-year-old male, died on November 2, 2013, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was shot to death at an apartment complex located at 3927 Hahns Lane around 3 a.m. Dochtermann had moved to Greensboro the year before his death. He had blue eyes and sandy blond hair. His mother, Dawn Hughes, described him as her best friend and the love of her life. She had him when she was 19 years old.
On the night of his death, Dochtermann and a close friend, Frankie Moon, visited Downtown Greensboro before heading to Ashton Woods Apartments to visit another friend. The shooting occurred in the parking lot, and Dochtermann's wallet was found on the ground by his car with the door open. Moon believes it was a possible robbery attempt gone wrong.
Seven years after his death, Dochtermann's family and friends raised money to increase the reward to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of a suspect. The reward includes $2,000 from the police and $5,000 from the state, following an announcement from Governor Roy Cooper in 2019. Despite the efforts, Greensboro police investigators have not publicly identified any suspects. On the seven-year anniversary of his murder, Dochtermann's family honored his memory by releasing green lanterns at Liberty Road Baptist Church in Randleman. The investigation remains ongoing, and no updates are available at this time.
In addition to his mother, Dochtermann is survived by his sister, Maria Pendola; grandparents, Albert and Maria Matson; stepfathers, Jerry Hughes and Tracy Flynn; great-grandmother, Esther Casale; several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his niece, Brooklynn. He was a dedicated employee at Triangle Grading and Paving and a gifted artist who loved music and his dog, Patches. Dochtermann always found a way to make people laugh, and everyone who met him loved him. His family continues to seek answers and justice for his untimely death.
