Jaeden Sharpe, a 9-year-old African American boy, was tragically shot on January 4, 2014, in Durham, North Carolina. Jaeden, a third-grader at W.G. Pearson Magnet Elementary School, was in a car with his mother, Lakeisha Holloway, when the incident occurred. Holloway, who was also shot in the face, survived the attack, but Jaeden succumbed to his injuries six days later. Two other 10-year-olds in the car were unharmed.
