Trekwan Covington, a 10-year-old African American boy, tragically lost his life on July 30, 2014, in Hope Mills, North Carolina. The incident occurred during a domestic dispute that escalated into a deadly shootout. Andrew J. Michaelis, the estranged husband of Valerie Michaelis, fired more than 60 rounds from an AR-15 rifle into a mobile home where Trekwan and other family members were present.
The chaos began at Michaelis' home on Bramblegate Road, where he attacked his estranged wife with a knife and a gun. Valerie managed to escape to her father's home on New Moon Drive, but Michaelis followed her there. Upon arrival, he began shooting into the residence, where Trekwan and six other people were inside.
Gary Frank Simpson, Valerie's father, was also killed in the shootout. Trekwan was struck by bullets in a hallway, while Simpson was shot in the living room. The incident left three people dead and three others injured, including three deputies who were responding to the scene.
Andrew J. Michaelis was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. The case garnered significant attention due to the brutal nature of the attack and the involvement of law enforcement officers.
