Russell Allen Mitchell, a 38-year-old male, was tragically killed on February 6, 2015, in Monkey Junction, North Carolina. The incident occurred at the Murphy USA gas station on Carolina Beach Road, adjacent to a Walmart. Mitchell was shot at close range by Richard Albert Nielsen, a 62-year-old male, in what authorities described as a premeditated and targeted act.
The shooting was part of a double murder-suicide that also involved Jessica Lynn Modolo, a 29-year-old female who was four months pregnant at the time. Nielsen approached Mitchell at the gas station, called him by name, and then shot him in the head with a semi-automatic handgun. Nielsen then proceeded to shoot Modolo, who was in a vehicle with three children, including her 6-year-old son and Mitchell's daughters, aged 9 and 7. Modolo was shot in the head and abdomen, resulting in the death of her unborn child. Nielsen then walked behind his own vehicle and fatally shot himself in the head.
The motive behind the shooting was linked to a business dispute involving stolen property. On February 5, 2015, Modolo had filed a report with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office regarding stolen property valued at approximately $4,126. The property, which included landscaping equipment and a generator, was allegedly sold off by Nielsen. Authorities believe that Nielsen, facing potential criminal responsibility for the theft, decided to take drastic measures to avoid going to jail. He had reached out to family members earlier that day, indicating that he would not be going to jail and had given away his possessions, including a debit card with its PIN number.
The investigation revealed that Nielsen had legally purchased the .380-caliber Ruger semi-automatic handgun used in the shooting from a local gun shop just an hour before the incident. Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts confirmed that Nielsen acted alone in the premeditated attack. Authorities emphasized that this was not a random act of violence but rather a deliberate and targeted act stemming from the failed business relationship between Nielsen, Mitchell, and Modolo.
Mitchell and Nielsen were both pronounced dead at the scene, while Modolo was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in critical condition. The tragic incident left the community in shock and highlighted the devastating consequences of unresolved disputes and the lengths to which individuals might go to avoid legal repercussions.
