On February 10, 2015, Yusor Mohammad Barakat, a 21-year-old Muslim woman, was tragically killed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Yusor, along with her husband Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, were shot to death in their home at the Finley Forest Condominiums on Summerwalk Circle. The victims were all of Middle Eastern descent and were known for their academic achievements and community service.
The perpetrator, Craig Stephen Hicks, a 46-year-old
neighbor, turned himself in to the Chapel Hill police shortly after the incident and was arrested. Hicks was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. The initial investigation by the Chapel Hill Police Department suggested that the crime was motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking. However, the possibility of religious bias was also considered, given that the victims were Muslim and Hicks was an atheist.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice launched their own investigations into the shooting. Despite the concerns about a potential hate crime, federal authorities could not find sufficient evidence to charge Hicks with a hate crime. On June 12, 2019, Hicks pleaded guilty to the murders and was sentenced to three consecutive terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
