The suspect in the shooting was identified as 22-year-old Kenneth Jerome Hobbs Jr., also an African American male from Fayetteville. After the shooting, Hobbs jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot. His body was found early the next morning near Rosehill Road and McArthur Drive. Authorities determined that Hobbs had been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Maurice V. Williams Jr. The circumstances surrounding Hobbs' death were investigated by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh.
